Every day children show up to school tired and hungry. I’m not talking about homeless or abused children. But kids from loving homes near the  Schools.

whose parents don’t understand the impact of school nutrition program and a good night’s sleep on a student’s ability to focus and learn. A healthy diet enables the body to work more efficiently, improves mental health, and makes learning possible.  Schools are not only providing their students with good, healthy meals, but also offer various opportunities and tips for students and parents to learn more about healthy eating.

Thousands of students enrolled in  Schools depend on free breakfast and lunch at school as their main source of nutrition. In the summer months,  Schools students can continue to enjoy these meals at no charge. As part of the Texas Department of Agriculture’s “Seamless Summer School Nutrition Program “,  Schools campuses that are hosting summer school nutrition program will offer anyone 18 years old and younger one breakfast and one lunch through Aug. 9, free of charge, regardless of ability to pay.

The “Seamless Summer School Nutrition Program ” is required by law in  Schools where large numbers of students receive free meals during the school nutrition program year, such as those who attend  Schools. How many children would have better focus if they ate a healthy breakfast, and stopped living on a sugar high? The mission of the  school nutrition program is to enhance the learning and health of children by nourishing their bodies and minds through healthy, nutritious meals that meet or exceed the Federal requirements set forth by the National School Breakfast and Lunch Programs.  It’s about time that districts recognize that holistic health impacts learning.

School Nutrition Program - What’s Healthier, Broiled, Grilled, Or Fried Food?

Americans love fried foods. There is nothing that we don’t love to deep fry, including even ice cream. Would it help to grill our foods?

Realistically, common sense says that adding fat to a deep fryer or a frying pan adds fat to something that is already fatty, namely meat, which is the most commonly fried item. The lowest amount of fat that will be added is when the food is broiled, because the flames or the electric broiler are going to cause the fat to melt away from the food.

The broiled sample of meat, done under a broiler had about one percent added fat, while the sautéed variety was about twice that much, but shockingly it was nearly exactly the same as the deep fried variety.

Where the problem comes in is that we generally put a great deal of the deep fried meats and other things into batter.  There are good fats and there are bad fats. Butter can be taken in moderation and if you fry your food in it you’re asking for heart disease in your future. Vegetable oils, pure corn oil perhaps are the way to go if you’re going to fry and forget that flour or breading. Fry without it to keep the fat absorption to a minimum.

Some of us however thought that grilling our food outdoors was the answer. It does lower the fat but t there is some considerations to the grilling factor too.

If you move the hot coals to the one side so that the fat doesn’t drip directly onto the coals it tends to prevent this. Cooking on gas grill may also be some help in this battle.

You might also try cooking at a lower temperature as well as moving the coals if you’re going to grill over your traditional coals and also try using regular wood as opposed to charcoal to barbecue your meat.

School Nutrition Program - Good Nutrition Leads to Better Learning and School Grades.

You might be surprised that what your kids eat might be the most important factor contributing to how well they do during their school day.

Studies unequivocally show that eating breakfast leads to better performance in school. In fact, findings indicate that children that eat a good breakfast get better scores on all standardized tests, and also, that they have better classroom behavior, as well as less hyperactivity at school. What they are eating also matters. Eating breakfasts that are high in sugar leads to eating more at lunch, fueling the epidemic of obesity.

What about lunch? The good news is that if your child is eating a school lunch on a regular basis, this meal is getting more healthy. Organizations such as the school nutrition program are making concerted efforts to encourage all public schools to serve more healthy fare. As a parent or teacher, take the time to examine what is regularly on the school nutrition program. If it could use an overhaul to offer better nutrition, lobby the principal and school board to make some changes. One school which made the switch to a healthier school lunch showed significant improvements in student performance and truancy were completely eliminated!

The FDA also maintains a database of healthy recipes that can be browsed by both a school nutrition program, and the general public. Focus on serving whole grains, lean meats and lots of fruits and vegetables. School lunches such as salad bars and wraps are popular with kids, while offering fantastic school nutrition program. Children are constantly growing and changing, and they need adequate vitamins and minerals to fuel that activity on a daily basis.
